Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Western PA origin, circa 1870, ovoid jar with tooled body and semi-rounded rim, brush-decorated with an undulating vine between straight and wavy freehand stripes above script "2" flanked and underscored by additional lines. A T-shaped crack across underside, forming a top-to-bottom crack on proper right side of jar, including a small chip and minor nick along crack. Rim secured with an old wire. Some additional staining, wear, and traces of old paint to surface. H 10".
