Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Bird Pecking Corn Decoration, Stamped "NEW YORK / STONEWARE CO. / FORT EDWARD. N.Y.," circa 1875, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a design of a crested songbird with ringed neck and long tail, pecking kernels of corn from a stylized ground. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity. Excellent color. An unusual variant on the popular New York State chicken or rooster pecking corn motifs. Provenance: William Bouck Collection. Spots of staining to surface. Several small rim chips. H 10 1/2".
