Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON, / BENNINGTON VT.," circa 1855, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird with raised, fanned tail, perched on a detailed log. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Few Norton birds of this style are known. Areas of professional restoration to front involving some of decoration, including a restored crack that extends onto underside. Chipping to inner rim for lid. Areas of painted brown restoration to Albany slip on interior. H 11 1/2".
