Fine Early-Period Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Face Jug, Signed "Lanier Meaders," Cleveland, GA, circa late 1960s, semi-ovoid jug with flared spout, decorated with a hand-modeled and applied clay face, including kaolin eyes with black-slip pupils placed with almond-shaped lids, rounded noses, protruding eras, and open mouth with pinched treatment to lower lip. Surface covered in a striated greenish alkaline glaze over a glossy reddish-brown ground. Underside incised with Lanier Meaders signature. Among the finer Lanier Meaders face jugs that we have offered, this work is distinguished by its glaze, ball-shaped eyes, and reductive features lacking teeth, all indicative of his earlier work. Provenance: Purchased by the consignor from Lanier at his pottery in the 1960's. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a glazed-over firing crack between the eyes and minor in-the-firing contact marks to bottom edge. H 9".
