Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1815-1820, ovoid jug with tooled spout, decorated with a freehand design of a bird on upswept tail on a stylized branch. The shape of the bird seems loosely inspired by incised designs by Henry Remmey, Sr. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Underside incised with a drawing of an urn. One of a small group of early Baltimore pieces known with a freehand cobalt figural design. Includes old wooden stopper. Crazing to base. A few small base chips. Staining to surface. In-the-firing contact marks to surface. H 15".
