Rare Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt and Manganese Slip Decoration, attributed to G.N. Fulton, Alleghany County, VA, circa 1875, ovoid pitcher with flared collar, tooled rim, and incised banding to body, the midsection and collar decorated with cobalt and brown slip foliate motifs, the base decorated with dipped brown slip. Brown slip highlights to handle terminals and a stripe to lower terminal. A scarce form by Fulton, featuring a rare and desirable use of two different colors of slip. Black marker inscription "FROM: / DAD / 2001." Spider crack on reverse. A large, circular in-the-firing contact mark to proper left side of pitcher. Two spout chips. A few small rim chips. A thin 2 1/2" crack from rim. A 1 1/4" hairline from rim. A 5/8" in-the-firing surface separation to rim on front, not visible on interior. H 11 5/8".
