Two-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "CORTLAND," Madison Woodruff, possibly with Romanzo Smith, NY State origin, circa 1867-1869, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a spiraling slip-trailed design with scrolled ends. Slip-trailed "2" to shoulder. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Includes salt-glazed lid, possibly original to the jar. Provenance: William Bouck Collection. Jar in good condition with various minor to small flaws: a small chip to interior of rim, a 1 1/4" flake and tiny nicks to inner rim for lid, very minor exfoliation to exterior of rim area, a small chip to reverse end of proper left handle, two small flakes and a minor nick to proper right handle, and minor staining. Lid with two edge flakes and finial chips. H 10 7/8".
