Fine Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird on Stump Decoration, Stamped "O.L. & A.K. BALLARD. / BURLINGTON, VT," circa 1856-1867, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, dark with bold slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a large striped stump with ground cover below. Spotted details throughout decoration. Cobalt accents to maker's mark and capacity mark. A 1 3/4" flake to interior of rim. A tiny in-the-firing ping to shoulder on front. Some faint crazing toward base on proper left side of crock, not visible on interior. Significant staining. An in-the-firing contact mark at base on reverse. A spot of white paint to rim on reverse. Scratches to Albany slip on interior. H 12 1/2".
