Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON, / BENNINGTON VT.," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with squared spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested pheasant with turned head and long tail, perched on a tree stump with stylized ground and shrubs at base. Few one-gallon jugs bearing this desirable Norton motif are known. Excellent condition with minor spout wear, including a minor, glazed-over spout chip. "J." omitted in maker's mark with tiny in-the-firing ping in its place. H 11 7/8".
