Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. SWANK & CO. / JOHNSTOWN, PA," circa 1875, ovoid jar with semi-rounded rim and arched lug handles, brush-decorated with a flowering vine motif on the front and reverse. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Dashed brushwork below one handle and impressed Swank maker's mark above a four-gallon capacity mark below opposing handle. A tight 5" crack on underside, continuing 5" up base. Some minor in-the-firing chipping to rim. Some bubbling to cobalt. Small spots of bloating to surface. Jar is somewhat is misshapen. A very shallow 7/8" base flake. Residue from use to surface. H 12 3/8".
