Rare and Fine Stepped Redware Jar with Copper Decoration, probably New England origin, late 18th or early 19th century, in the form of a stepped cylinder with heavily-tooled treatment, decorated with dark copper streaks and covered in a clear lead glaze. Underside with pencil inscription, part of which reads, "about 100 years / old / now 1878." In-the-firing fissure to underside, thinner on interior, with very old plaster filling, possibly added when the jar was made. Wear to rim and upper edge of lowest section of jar. Other lesser edge wear. A shallow 1 3/8" flake to bottom edge, possibly in-the-firing. Other minor base wear. Kiln furniture marks to underside. H 7".
