Rare Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Cumberland, MD Advertising, Stenciled "JAMES HAMILTON & CO. / MANUFACTURERS. / GREENSBORO. PA.," circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, featuring the stenciled advertising, "C.F. HETZEL & CO. / GROCERIES & C. / CUMBERLAND. / MD," above James Hamilton maker's stenciling. Freehand stripe decoration to shoulder and base. Stenciled "3" with flourishes at base. An unusual example of doubly-stenciling Western Maryland advertising stoneware. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A large T-shaped crack to underside, extending 7" up reverse. A 2 1/2" loss to rim on reverse. A long, shallow contact mark to top of rim. H 13 1/2".
