Outstanding Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Decoration of a Bird Perched on a Finger, OH origin, mid 19th century, highly-ovoid jug with tooled spout, exuberantly-decorated with a large brushed design of a bird with heavily-spotted wing and striped body, perched on the pointing finger of a hand accented with cobalt slashes. A crescent-shaped flourish appears in front of the bird. Decorated below the spout with a cobalt "3" within a wreath. A wonderfully-decorated work with superb color and strong folk art appeal. Small spout chips. A 1 3/4" in-the-firing surface chip (contact mark) near base on front. A 3 1/2" Y-shaped line below handle on reverse, which appear to be surface level only. A small in-the-firing contact mark at base on reverse. H 16".
