Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Elaborate Cobalt Bird Decoration, Inscribed "H.," attributed to A.O Whittemore, Havana, NY, circa 1870, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird with turned head and long tail, perched on a scrolled plant motif. Appealing striped and spotted details throughout bird's body. Inscribed "H" to shoulder, likely referring to Havana, the churn's city of manufacture. Exceptional size and desirable bird motif in Whittemore's distinctive style. Four short lines from rim. Exfoliation to reverse and base on front. Staining to bottom half of churn. A short vertical line to Albany slip on interior rim area, not visible on exterior. H 10 3/8".
