Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "N. CLARK & CO / LYONS," NY State origin, circa 1840, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a large tulip plant bearing three blossoms and a leaf, flanked on each side by a cobalt "3." Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Excellent decoration and color. Rim chips. A shallow flake to one handle. A glazed-over iron ping to "3" on proper right side of jar's front. Other minor in-the-firing surface flaws. A lightly-stained area to center of jar's front and other minor staining. A few in-the-firing chips to underside at edge. H 11 5/8".
