Two-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO: / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1860, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a stylized branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Includes salt-glazed stoneware lid. Jar with chips to one handle, a few small chips to interior of rim, and heavy chipping to inner rim for lid. Lid with a large edge chip, a smaller in-the-firing edge chip, and an area of clay residue to top. H (excluding lid) 11 1/4".
