Two One-Gallon Stoneware Bowls with Cobalt Decoration, Strasburg, VA origin, circa 1870-1880, one stamped "J.M. HICKERSON / STRASBURG, VA," circa 1880, brush-decorated with upswept swags on the front and reverse; the other stamped "S.H. SONNER / STRASBURG, VA.," circa 1870, brush-decorated with dashes on the front, reverse, and below each handle. Hickerson bowl is somewhat out-of-round with crude restoration to one handle, nicks to bottom edge of rim, and a minor nick to bottom edge. Sonner bowl with restored hole in underside, rim chips, a thin 4" crack from rim, and two chips to each handle. Dimensions (of Hickerson bowl): W 9 1/4" ; H 6 1/4".
