Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Canning Jar with Cottageville, WV Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1880, tapered jar with semi-squared "wax sealer" rim, featuring the stenciled advertising, "D.W. RHODES. / DEALER IN / MERCHANDISE / COTTAGEVILLE.W.V." Includes old tin canning lid. Provenance: From a fifty-year West Virginia collection. A 2 1/4" crack on underside, continuning 5 1/4" diagonally on side of jar. Inner wax sealer rim with a 1" chip and other small chips. Interior of rim with two small chips, a small in-the-making dent, and minor roughness. Staining to surface. A small glazed-over ping to base on front. H 7 7/8".
