Rare Moravian Redware Squirrel Bottle with Whieldon-Type Glaze, Salem, NC origin, circa 1801-1829, molded in the form of a standing squirrel feeding on a nut atop an oval base, the lead-glazed surface colorfully-decorated with alternating copper and manganese sponging over a slip-coated ground, a treatment often associated with the work of Staffordshire potter, Thomas Whieldon (1719-1795). Losses to base. Various glaze wear. A glazed-over loss to one ear and minor chip to same ear. A 4 1/2" hairline from spout on reverse. A 1" hairline from spout on front. Some old residue to head/snout. H 8".
