Two Pieces of Shenandoah Valley Redware, VA and MD origin, second half 19th century, a glazed redware spittoon with spattered manganese decoration, attributed to Anthony Bacher at the Big Hunting Creek Pottery, Mechanicstown (now Thurmont), MD, circa 1880; paired with a glazed redware jar with tooled shoulder and pronounced rim, New Market, VA origin, second half 19th century. Spittoon with surface wear to shoulder, a thin Y-shaped crack emanating from the opening in top, wear to upper body, and chips to opening at shoulder. Jar with rim and base chips, some light surface wear, and a 5/8" surface line in rim. Dimensions (of redware spittoon): Diam. 8 1/4" x H 4" ; H (of jar) 8 1/2".
