Exceptional Copper-Glazed Redware Wall Pocket, attributed to J. Eberly & Co., Strasburg, VA, circa 1890, flaring form with footed base, coggled rim, and scrolled hanger, the front decorated with a hand-modeled and applied clay bird perched on a flowering plant, feeding on a smaller blossom. Impressed circular details to flowers, incised details to bird and leaves, and stippled incising to central blossom. Surface covered in a very rare light-green copper glaze, achieved by applied a lead-and-copper glaze over a slip-coated surface. Outstanding color and classic Eberly form. Literature: Illustrated in Comstock, The Pottery of the Shenandoah Valley Region, pg. 267, fig. 5.190. Provenance: From an eighty-plus year private collection. Restored beak to bird, typical of this form. A small in-the-firing surface chip (lime ping) to right flower. A small glaze flake and tiny glaze flake to reverse. Very minor rim wear. H 7 1/2".
