Scarce Redware Urn with Lion's Head Handles and Copper-Glazed Floral Decoration, attributed to Solomon Bell, Strasburg, VA, circa 1850-1880, ovoid form with footed base, and flared rim with triply-coggled edges, the handles molded in the form of open-mouthed lion's heads with detailed manes; urn's surface dipped in beige slip and brush-decorated on the front and reverse with a meandering leafy stem bearing a large flower blossom in the Strasburg style. Original drain hole in underside. As this desirable form was made for use outdoors, condition is often an issue and a number of surviving examples have been found with significant exfoliation, losses to the lion's heads, or breaks. This example survives in noteworthy condition for its type. Chipping to one lion's nose. A 2 1/2" chip to base. A tiny nick to rim. Some staining to surface. H 14 1/4".
