Rare Manganese-Decorated Redware Canning Jar, Stamped "JOHN BELL," Waynesboro, PA, circa 1840-1880, cylindrical form with rounded shoulder and angled rim with flange on interior to hold a lid, decorated around the rim area with daubs of manganese over a yellow clay ground and covered in a clear lead glaze. Impressed with John Bell maker's mark on underside. John Bell's popular yellow earthenware canning jars were rarely produced with added manganese decoration, as seen on this example.
