Exceptional Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Elaborate Cobalt Jug Decoration, New York State origin, circa 1875, cylindrical crock with applied lug handles and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a stoneware jug bearing floral decoration in the Northeastern style, accented with heavy striping, and seated on a grassy lawn. This crock may have been used by a Northeastern merchant as a trade sign of sorts indicating that he or she sold stoneware. The size of the design, color, and rigorous application of the cobalt make this work a particularly striking example of the New York State stoneware aesthetic. Very nice condition. A thin, approximately 3 1/8" crack from rim on reverse. Two minor, 3/4" surface cracks to rim on reverse. Two rim chips to exterior. Four small rim chips to interior. A chip to one handle. H 12 1/4".
