Two-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, early 19th century, ovoid jar with squared rim and open loop handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an incised design of a stylized fruit with leaves and a bud emanating from. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Freehand cobalt "2 1/2" under one handle. This design relates to motifs found on pieces produced by Manhattan-trained potter, John Morgan, while working years later in Staunton, Virginia. A large rim chip and a few minor rim chips. Base chips. Exfoliation and in-the-firing pings to surface. Traces of old blue and gold paint residue to surface. H 13".
