Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Western PA origin, circa 1865, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed stem bearing tulip blossoms and buds, applied over a slip-coated surface. Freehand stripe decoration above and below. Horizontal cobalt stripe decoration to handles and highlights to handle terminals. A long spider line extending from shoulder to base on front. An 8 1/2" inverted Y-shaped line on reverse. Two chips to exterior of rim and two chips to interior of rim. A narrow 1" in-the-firing chip to underside at edge. A small chip and short crack to end of one handle. Streaks of staining. H 14 3/4".
