Very Rare One-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Inscribed "B.F. Gordon," Stamped "S. BELL & SON. / STRASBURG," VA origin, circa 1890, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and thin, squared rim, brush-decorated with a series of swags above the large freehand name, "B.F. Gordon," over a slip-coated surface. According to Comstock, B.F. Gordon was a wholesale merchant with whom Richard Franklin "Polk" Bell (proprietor of the pottery at the time) did business in the mid-1890's. (Comstock, p. 239.) Few examples of inscribed stoneware by this pottery are known. Excellent condition with a few minor rim chips. H 9 7/8".
