Rare and Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "R. BUTT / W City DC," circa 1835, ovoid jar with footed base, squared rim, and arched tab handles, decorated on the front with a brushed double-stemmed tulip motif and on the reverse with a lavish triple-stemmed floral motif. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Lesser-seen maker's mark with outstanding decoration inspired by David Parr, Sr. of Baltimore. Base chips. A shallow 1 1/2" flake to underside at edge. A 1" in-the-firing flake to top of handle and a small chip to same handle. A minor in-the-firing surface chip to front. An in-the-firing contact mark to shoulder on reverse. A shallow in-the-firing contact mark to top of rim. H 9 3/4".
