Very Rare Six-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Snake and Flower Basket Decoration, Stamped "SATTERLEE & MORY / FORT EDWARD, N.Y.," circa 1870, large-sized, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a flower basket brimming with flowers, leaves, and dotted trails, supported by a looping snake with striped body and open mouth. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. The first example of this design that we have ever offered. An elaborate variant of this motif decorates a famous twelve-gallon cooler made for potter, Luman P. Norton, in 1859, now at the Bennington Museum in Bennington, Vermont. Some light fry to cobalt. Water glass staining to interior. Minor water glass staining to reverse. Some small scattered surface flakes, primarily to reverse.
