One-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to R.J. Grier, Chester County, PA, circa 1870, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder and ribbed lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with two large horizontal floral motifs. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals and dashes below each handle. Unusually elaborate decoration for this maker. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced PA collection, purchased by the consignor between 1963 and 1975. A top-to-bottom crack from rim on reverse. A 2" hairline from rim on reverse. Some minor surface wear. H 5 3/8" ; Diam. 9 1/4".
