Extremely Rare and Important Early-Period Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. BELL," John Waynesboro, PA, circa 1840, finely-potted, cylindrical jar with footed base, angled shoulder, and thin rim, decorated with brushed diagonal tulip bottoms below a series of cobalt dashes. This jar is one of a few known examples of salt-glazed stoneware bearing Bell's early "J. BELL" stamp and was likely made during the beginning of his venture into stoneware production. The jar's highly unusual canister form follows that typically seen in the potter's redware production from this time period, indicating that Bell had yet to differentiate between stoneware and redware forms. The jar's light salt glazing indicates Bell was still perfecting his work. A 3" hairline from rim, a 3/4" hairline from rim, some in-the-firing spalling to slip at shoulder. H 7".
