Rare Slip-Decorated Redware Charger, Inscribed "Our Lady of Mount Carmel," Norwalk, CT origin, second quarter 19th century, with coggled edge, the lead-glazed interior lavishly-decorated in yellow slip with script inscription, "Our / Lady of / Mount / Carmel," underscored by a stripe. This name was used for the Biblical figure, Mary, the mother of Jesus, for her role as patroness of the Carmelite Order of the Catholic Church. This order was founded in the 12th-13th centuries by Christian hermits living on Mount Carmel, located in Northern Israel. This large work may have been made for the liturgical feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, celebrated on July 16. Excellent size and bold slip. Provenance: A recently-discovered example.
