Exceptional Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "NORWALK / SMITH.&. DAY," CT origin, circa 1845, highly-ovoid jug with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded spout, decorated with a boldly-brushed design of a daisy blossom accented with cobalt dashes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. The finest Norwalk jug that we have ever offered. Provenance: The Estate of Susan H. Myers, author of Handcraft to Industry and former Smithsonian Curator of Ceramics and Glass. A 6 1/2" diagonal, Y-shaped line emanating from base on reverse. A small in-the-firing surface chip to handle. Two in-the-firing chips to top of spout. A 1 1/2" in-the-firing fissure to underside. A 7/8" in-the-firing iron ping to left side of jug which is glazed over. H 14 1/2".
