Outstanding Stoneware Pitcher with Freehand Cobalt Decoration of a Hatted Man Raising a Glass, Inscribed "all time happy!," attributed to William Macquoid, Manhattan, NY, circa 1870, ovoid pitcher with footed base and short, narrow collar, decorated with a large brushed design of a hatted man raising a glass, facing the arched inscription, "all time happy!" Cobalt banding to foot and base of collar. This pitcher, bearing a distinctive Macquoid motif, was likely made to serve beer, its whimsical inscription presumably referring to the enjoyment of strong drink. Macquoid is known for producing some of the most extravagant and unusual figural designs in all of American stoneware. Featuring an outstanding design considered rare on any form, this work is truly exceptional as very few figural-decorated pitchers from this pottery are known. Also of note is the exceptionally large size of the decoration and inscription, which have excellent coverage over the vessel's front. A 4" vertical crack from rim on reverse. A 1 3/8" vertical crack to spout. A 1 1/4" chip to foot on side of pitcher. Some very minor spots of fry to cobalt. H 11".
