Rare Large-Sized Stoneware Jug with Purplish Slip Decoration, Stamped "J REMMEY / MANHATTAN-WELLS / NEW-YORK," circa 1810, approximately three-gallon ovoid jug with tooled foot and heavily-tooled spout. Shoulder impressed with the large maker's mark of John Remmey III, "J REMMEY / MANHATTAN-WELLS / NEW-YORK." Mark surrounded by an incised scalloped border and brushed over in unusual purplish-colored slip. Additional slip decorating ends of handle. This color of decoration is occasionally found on early Northeastern U.S. stoneware, and appears to be a mixture of cobalt and manganese. An excellent example of this form by Remmey, rarely found in such a large size. Approximately 2 1/2" x 3/4" restored section to right side of top of spout. Base chips, the largest on which measures 1 1/2". Faint, in-the-firing lines in surface. Some small salt drips to right side of jug's shoulder. Recessed spot near base. H 15 3/4".
