Very Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Bird Decoration, Stamped "PAUL : CUSHMANS," Albany, NY, circa 1810, highly-ovoid jug with delicately-potted, heavily-tooled spout, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a long-necked bird with striped tail. Stamped below with coggled "PAUL : CUSHMANS" mark, used at the Albany, New York pottery owned by merchant, Paul Cushman. This jug is one of a small number of signed pieces from this pottery known featuring an incised bird decoration. Wide, sealed crack extending from shoulder of jug to underside. A thin Y-shaped line to underside. A large, 2 1/2" in-the-firing loss to bottom edge. Additional heavy chipping to base. A small chip bottom edge of spout. In-the-firing pings to surface. H 16".
