Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "S. BELL & SON / STRASBURG," VA origin, circa 1890, large-sized, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a brushed design of swags and hanging flowers, applied over a slip-coated surface. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Faint S. Bell & Sons maker's mark at shoulder. Incised "6" under one handle. A crack across underside, forming a large, tight Y at base. Some staining and in-the-firing discoloration to surface. H 15 1/2".
