Outstanding Four-Gallon Stoneware "Gin" Cooler with Profuse Cobalt Floral Decoration, Northeastern U.S origin, circa 1850, cylindrical, jug-form cooler with stepped circular bunghole, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a flowering plant, embellished with spots and radiating trails. Elaborate scrolled foliate decoration emanating from bunghole. Shoulder inscribed, "Gin," below a script 4. Includes early metal spigot. Excellent form, decoration, and color. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a glazed-over base chip on reverse and some minor bubbling to cobalt. Stopper in spout. H 18".
