Rare Four-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Snuff Jar with Detroit, MI Advertising, American, circa 1852-1885, ovoid form with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, impressed with the cobalt-highlighted advertising, "HANNA & CO / SNUFF." This jar was made for the tobacco store of John Hanna, who opened his business at 112-114 Woodward Ave. in Detroit, Michigan in 1852 and continued operating it until the 1880s. Includes a fitting salt-glazed stoneware lid, embossed "JM." Excellent condition with two very tiny chips underneath rim. Lid in very nice condition with a short hairline from edge, a minor in-the-firing fissure at edge, two in-the-firing chips to underside at edge, and a few tiny post-firing chips to underside at edge. H (excluding lid) 12 3/4".
