Rare One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird on Branch Decoration, Stamped "BELMONT AVE. / POTTERY.," Newark, NJ origin, circa 1880, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of crested bird perched on a stylized branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. The cobalt used on the bird has a slight purplish tinge to it, indicating it may have been mixed with manganese. Excellent condition with some very faint surface lines to underside, a small, in-the-firing iron ping to underside, a tiny rim nick, and some light staining. H 7 7/8".
