Very Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Double Pheasant Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON, / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1855, large-sized, cylindrical jug with squared spout, decorated with an imposing slip-trailed design of crossed pheasants with crests and turned heads, perched on the branches of a tree stump. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Exceptional size and phenomenal decoration. One of a few J. & E. Norton jugs with this capacity and decoration known. Restored handle. Additional restoration to underside and base, extending to left and right of decoration. Restoration does include some painted touch-up to base of stump and ground, but not to birds. A few small in-the-firing flaws to surface. H 17 1/2".
