Outstanding Two-Gallon Iron-Decorated Stoneware Spouted Jar, Stamped "ORCUTT & CRAFTS / PORTLAND," Martin Crafts and Eleazer Orcutt, Portland, ME, circa 1835, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, flared rim, and arching horizontal handle, the upper body dipped in an iron-oxide solution, the entire surface covered in a clear salt glaze. Includes a fitting 19th century salt-glazed lid, not original to the jar. Exceptional form, the first of its specific style that we have seen in 19th century American stoneware. Possibly used as an apothecary jar. Jar in excellent condition with some in-the-firing chipping to bottom edge. Lid with a small chip to knob. H (to top of handle) 13 1/2".
