Rare Glazed Redware Soap Dish, Stamped "JOHN BELL," Waynesboro, PA origin, circa 1840-1880, molded oval form with scalloped walls, the interior pierced with a large central drain hole surrounded by eight smaller holes. Shoulder with semi-circular opening. Surface decorated with heavy manganese sponging over a yellow-orange clay ground and covered in a clear lead glaze. Underside impressed "JOHN BELL." One of a very few examples of this form that we have offered, this dish having been made in a slightly larger size. Excellent, essentially as-made condition, retaining a brilliant luster to the lead glaze. A lack of wear suggests this piece was rarely used. L 6 1/4" ; W 5 1/16" ; H 2 1/2".
