Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "W. ROBERTS. BINGHAMTON NY," circa 1870, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird with long tail and well-detailed body, perched on a flowering vine. Light cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A 4 7/8" crack on underside, which forms a 1 7/8" Y at base below one handle. A 4 1/2" vertical surface line, not visible on interior, appears beside this crack on the far left side of the jar's front. H 11 1/4".
