Exceptional One-Gallon Stoneware Canning Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "BAYLESS / McCARTHEY & CO. /LouisviLLe, KY," attributed to James H. Miller, Brandenburg, KY, circa 1860, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder and thin rim with "wax sealer" interior. Front stenciled with the merchant advertising, "BAYLESS / McCArtHEY & CO / LouisviLLE KY," above an elaborate stenciled design of a flowering vine modeled after Miller's distinctive brushwork. Slip-trailed stripe decoration to shoulder. Outstanding in color and decoration, this jar is the first example of Kentucky-made stoneware that we have offered featuring advertising for Bayless, McCarthey, & Co., a firm, which, in later years, employed Western Pennsylvania potters to produce their wares. Excellent condition with a shallow 3/4" rim chip on side of jar and some minor chipping to interior of rim and inner wax sealer rim. H 9 3/4".
