Five-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Incised "Lm," attributed to Dave at Lewis Miles' Stony Bluff Manufactory, Horse Creek Valley, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1855, highly-ovoid jar with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, the surface covered in a pale-green alkaline glaze with whitish runs. Incised by the enslaved African-American potter with the initials, "Lm," for Lewis Miles at the shoulder. Dave's distinctive incised X appears to the right of the initials. Classic Dave form with appealing glaze. A 2 1/4" chip to side of rim. A small rim chip on reverse. A faint Y-shaped line to base area on front. A small base chip. H 13 3/4".
