Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Bird and Flag Decoration, Stamped "C. HAIDLE & CO. / UNION POTTERY, / NEWARK. N.J.," circa 1870, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed design of two birds clutching a striped banner surmounted by a heart or crown with cross finial. Further decorated below with a series of wavy, crossed flags. Inscribed "2. G." to shoulder. Among the finest examples of Newark, NJ stoneware known. New Jersey stoneware pieces from this period rarely featured designs of this decorative quality. A minor rim chip. Provenance: A recently-surfaced example. Surface restoration to front of jar involving tail of right bird, including a small area of additional surface restoration above and below tail. Reverse with a 3/4" restored rim chip. Some typical wear to inner rim for lid.
