Exceptional Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Pitcher with Applied Decoration, attributed to the Wingender Pottery, Haddonfield, NJ, late 19th century, wheel-thrown, highly-ovoid pitcher with profusely-rouletted collar and base, the front decorated with a molded and applied image of King Gambrinus atop a keg, raising a stein of beer. Sides of pitcher are profusely-decorated with molded and applied vine and gnome designs. Ornately-molded handle with thumbrest. Cobalt highlights throughout. This piece is a masterwork of its type, the first King Gambrinus pitcher that we have ever offered featuring additional applied decoration to the sides. Additional details that set this work apart from other Wingender pitchers of its style are the object's small size, dramatic form, molded handle, and extensive rouletted decoration. Excellent condition with two small base chips, a short line at base, and some minor surface wear. H 8".
