Extremely Rare Rockingham Spittoon, Stamped "OTTO V. LEWIS / MECHANICVILLE / NY," mid 19th century, molded octagonal spittoon with circular opening at shoulder and at center of recessed top, featuring relief floral designs on each panel, the surface decorated in reddish-brown slip over a cream-colored ground and covered in a clear glaze. Underside impressed with extremely rare Otto V. Lewis maker's mark from his tenure in Mechanicville, NY, underscored by an impressed asterisk. This spittoon is the first example bearing this mark that we have offered. A few base chips. Minor wear to upper edge. A small flake to recessed top. H 4 3/4" ; W 8 3/8".
