Extremely Rare Miniature Glazed Redware Spittoon, attributed to Samuel Butter, Clarksburg, VA, circa 1820-1850, cylindrical form with rounded shoulder and circular opening in top, the surface covered in a dark-brown, lead-and-manganese glaze. Underside inscribed in pencil "SAMUEL / BUTTERS / CLARKSBURG / FROM THE / SIGHT / MAIN ST." Few signed or attributed Butter pieces are known. Provenance: Excavated at the Samuel Butter Pottery in Clarksburg, VA several decades ago. Large base chips. Some glaze wear. Diam. 2 3/8" ; H 1 1/8".
